BYD Auto NZ moves to break fuel dependence and secures major vehicle supply

BYD New Zealand locks in major stock increase to give Kiwis an immediate alternative to petrol & diesel

As fuel prices continue to surge and supply uncertainty rattles motorists, BYD New Zealand has taken decisive action - locking in a major increase in vehicle supply to give Kiwis a real, immediate alternative to petrol and diesel.

General Manager Warren Willmot has completed urgent negotiations in China, where he pushed BYD headquarters to prioritise New Zealand. The outcome is a significant uplift in production allocation across both Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), with the first shipments landing from May.

At a time when many brands are constrained by supply, BYD is moving in the opposite direction - flooding the market with new energy vehicles and giving customers a way out of the fuel cycle.

“Let’s be clear - Kiwis are over being at the mercy of the petrol pump,” said Warren Willmot, General Manager of BYD New Zealand. “We did not go to China to have conversations - we went to secure vehicles. And we’ve done exactly that. This is a step-change in supply that means people can act now, not sit on a waiting list while fuel prices climb.”

BYD New Zealand is now capping maximum wait times at 90 days, with most customers expected to take delivery significantly sooner - putting it among the fastest-moving brands in the market.

New Models Designed to Replace Petrol, Not Just Compete with It

Arriving from May, two new models are set to directly challenge traditional petrol and diesel vehicles across key segments:

  • BYD Seal 06 Wagon – A long-range family vehicle delivering up to 1,600km of combined range, designed to all but eliminate fuel stops for everyday driving.
  • BYD Shark 6 2L – A high-capability plug-in hybrid ute with a 2.0-litre powertrain and 3,500kg braked towing capacity built to take on diesel utes head-on without the ongoing fuel cost.

Both models arrive alongside the expanded supply, giving Kiwis immediate access to vehicles that don’t just reduce fuel use, but fundamentally replace it.

“We’re not here to play on the edges of the market - we’re here to change it,” Willmot added. “Whether it’s a family car or a work ute, there is no reason to stay locked into petrol or diesel anymore. The vehicles are here, the supply is here, and the wait times are gone.”

Global Backing to Accelerate the Shift

Mr. Wing You, General Manager of BYD Australasia, said the increased allocation reflects BYD’s long-term commitment to transforming the New Zealand fleet.

“BYD headquarters is fully committed to the New Zealand market and to helping Kiwis move beyond fuel dependency,” said Wing You. “Our mission is to cool the Earth by one degree and reduce reliance on oil. Every Kiwi - whether an individual, a business, or a government fleet - should have access to new energy vehicles. This increase in supply is about turning that vision into reality, right now.”

With supply increasing and new models arriving, BYD New Zealand is urging customers not to wait. The shift away from petrol isn’t coming - it’s already here.
